The L'Oréal-UNESCO Award "Women in Science annually recognizes the outstanding career of five women scientists, one for each continent. In 2011 this honor went to:


Africa and Arab States Faiza Al Kharafi (Professor of Chemistry at the University of Kuwait, Safat, Kuwait), for his research on corrosion, a problem of vital importance for water treatment and oil industry.



Latin America Silvia Torres-Peimbert (Professor Emeritus of the Institute of Astronomy, National Autonomous University of Mexico, UNAM, Mexico) for his work on the chemical composition of planetary nebulae, fundamental to understanding the origin of the universe.


North America Jillian Banfield (Professor of Planetary Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences Department of Material and Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, USA) for his research on the behavior of bacteria and matter under extreme conditions and their impact on Earth's environment.


Asia-Pacific Vivian Wing-Wah Yam (energy chemistry professor at the University of Hong Kong, China) work on light-emitting materials and innovative methods to capture solar energy.


Europe Anne L'Huillier (atomic physics professor at the University of Lund, Sweden) for his work on creating a camera that can capture extremely fast phenomena in the span of one attosecond (a billionth of a billionth of a second).
